Run-on Sentence Summary
A phenomenal series of science fiction short stories.
This has to be one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. It won a ridiculous amount of awards for its beautiful writing and unique concepts, and stands out to me simply for the sheer number of unique ideas per page. I’m a big fan of “hard” science fiction, which stresses technical accuracy, and this book excels in it. The title story, “Stories of Your Life,” gracefully combines compassionate storytelling about human characters with a hard scifi approach to first alien contact, and is being turned into a movie.
Another standout for me was “Understand,” which essentially takes the premise of the movie “Limitless,” a pill that enhances your intelligence, and executes it far more thoughtfully without all of the hollywood bull crap.
This is a Jimmy kind of book, no doubt.
“Perhaps, he thought, it’d be better to live in a story where the righteous were rewarded and the sinners were punished, even if the criteria for righteousness and sinfulness eluded him, than to live in a reality where there was no justice at all.”
